Blanket Bay Chefs Win Gold at Southern Lights Salon

May 20, 2007

Culinarians from Queenstown, Cromwell, Dunedin and Invercargill converged on Central Otago last weekend to showcase their cooking talents at the 2004 Southern Lights Salon Culinaire held at the Otago Polytechnic, Cromwell Campus. The weekend encompassed live cook offs and static events for both junior and senior level industry competitors.

”The calibre of creativity and skill level displayed over the 2 days of competition was fantastic" Chief Judge Mr Tony Smith of Crown Plaza Christchurch said.

Blanket Bay again set the scene, after last year receiving top honours in many of the classes entered into, returning this year with a tally of 5 Gold medals, 8 Silver and 2 Titles.

Aaron Ballantyne (following on from a very successful event last year) placed first in all 5 classes entered into, whilst Pastry Chef Natasha Le Grange, entering into her first competitions, collected a Gold and 2 Silver also. Sous chef Mark Sycamore collected the overall prize for ‘Chef of the Region' for scoring the highest aggregate points over the weekend, with the grand finale being the cook off for ‘Brigade of the Region' in which Mark Sycamore and Executive Chef Jason Dell cooked together in a live team event to take out the final prize in what was a highly successful clean sweep.
