Sunday Times UK awards Blanket Bay as "The Ultimate Escape"

The crucial factor in elevating New Zealand to A-list status is its new wave of superlodges opulent properties that combine New Zealand's breathtaking natural scenery with seriously luxurious accommodation, fabulous wines and gourmet dinners so wrote Jill Hartley, travel writer for the Sunday Times UK in an article headlined NZ Goes Glam“ the best of 2004.

Two weeks after the October 30 appearance of that article, Blanket Bay near Glenorchy was named The Ultimate Escape in the Editors Awards section of the 2004 Sunday Times Travel Magazine Awards.

The magazine announced the winners of the travel awards in London last week to an invited audience at Britain's largest travel trade show, The World Travel Market.

Blanket Bay manager Philip Jenkins said the news of the award came when he was notified by Tourism New Zealand.

We are immensely proud, he said. When we think about all the thousands of resorts, hotels, lodges and destinations there are around the world, this is an amazing accolade and one that is a reflection of our stunning location, superb facilities and the high level of service we deliver.

George Hickton Chief Executive of Tourism New Zealand said awards like this are a huge boost to the profile of New Zealand as a whole, and help keep us upper-most in the minds of travellers.

"Readers of The Times are a good match to our target market, the Interactive Traveller. These are the type of visitors we are trying to attract to New Zealand, and we know these people have money to spend on quality tourism experiences while they are in this country.

Blanket Bay's award is further proof to these travellers that the New Zealand's luxury tourism experiences are up with the best in the world."

Destination Queenstown CEO David Kennedy said Queenstown has come along way from being an overnight stop for scenic coach tours.

Queenstown is constantly developing products and services that meet the needs of the global traveller. As a visitor destination Queenstown has developed from a bus tour stop to become the adventure capital and from there to a quality, premier resort that is a favoured destination for the high end traveller.

A plaque and copy of the high-end, glossy magazine was presented to Garrick Emms, marketing director of the New Zealand Lodge Association, who represented Tourism New Zealand and Blanket Bay at the award ceremony.

It was a privilege to collect the award which was presented by celebrity presenter and royal reporter Jenny Bond. The Sunday Times travel magazine is a major publication and extremely highly regarded in the UK. This award really is a major boost for Blanket Bay and New Zealand.
